How to Clean Wallpaper: Smudges, Fingerprints and Stains

Cleaning Wallpaper

Cleaning wallpaper doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking — wallpaper is made to take the wear and tear of everyday life, and using the right cleaning technique makes quick work of any dirt, fingerprints, smears or stains!

Create Your Own Cleaning Solution

This is a true DIY project and all it takes is a few ingredients and some elbow grease to get the job done. For walls that display ordinary levels of dirt, mix up a batch of the following:

  • 1 gallon of warm water
  • A hearty squeeze of any clear dishwashing liquid

For walls that are heavily stained or soiled, use this concoction instead:

  • 1 gallon of warm water
  • 1 cup of clear, nonsudsing ammonia
  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • 1 cup of borax

It’s a good idea to test the solution in a discreet place on your wall first, just to make sure it won’t harm your wallpaper or cause it to peel off.

Finally, have a second bucket on hand for the clean water you will use for rinsing.

Easy Does It

To clean your wallpaper, begin by wiping it down with a dry sponge, duster or dry cleaning cloth.

For washable wallpaper, use a natural sponge dampened with your cleaning solution. Start at the bottom and work your way to the top, one section at a time, but take care not to scrub too hard or get the paper too wet.

Rinse with clean water and use dry cloths to wipe any extra water that remains after rinsing.

This method should work for most types of wallpaper. However, some textures, colors or coatings may differ, so always check the manufacturers’ cleaning instructions before you begin.

Smudge Removal

To remove smudges or fingerprints you will need:

  • An art-gum eraser or
  • A slice of plain white bread

Simply rub the eraser or the bread lightly over the smudge, stain or fingerprint until it’s gone.

What Not to Use

You never want to use some cleaning products on wallpaper. These include:

  • Soft scrubs
  • Scouring powders
  • Scrubbing pads

Using these or any similar product can scratch your paper or even tear it, resulting in an even bigger problem than you had before you started!
