Basic Planning Steps for Installing New Wallpaper, Part 1

planning steps installing new wallpaper

If you’re considering installing new wallpaper in your home, whether for a single wall, a full room or even multiple rooms or major areas, it’s important to take some time to plan out the process. Wallpaper installation isn’t as simple as running to the store, grabbing some paper and slapping it on the wall – there are supplies you’ll need and steps you should take to ensure everything goes smoothly.

At Wallpaper Warehouse, we’re proud to offer a wide range of discounted wallpaper options, with a wide variety of wallpaper manufacturers featured in our stock. In this two-part blog, we’ll go over the general steps we recommend when it comes to accomplishing a high-quality wallpaper installation.

Early Planning Stages

Planning is often the single most important step to this entire process, and it begins well before you ever hang a single line of paper. The primary focus here is to visualize what you want the final product to look like – this begins by defining your area and roughly how much wallpaper you’ll need to buy. Take the time to accurately measure your walls in height and width, then plan to purchase a bit more wallpaper than you might need. This is to ensure you have extra materials around in case mistakes are made.

Goals and Color Selection

As you complete the planning process, you should be asking yourself several questions related to the overall goals and style you desire for the project. Are you trying to add height or width appearance dimensions to the room? In these cases, striped patterns are often the best choice.

What about if you’re looking to use wallpaper as a contrast to the room’s furniture and other color themes? In these situations, you’ll look for either bright or dark wallpaper colors depending on the tone of the room as it currently sits. You should be thinking about not only how the wall itself will look, but how it will complement the other elements already present in the space.

Wall Preparation

Once you’ve assessed your goals and purchased the proper wallpaper amounts, it’s time to prepare the wall or walls in question for installation. The first step here is sanding down any imperfections or non-flat surfaces on the wall, including sanding off any glossy paint that might impact how well your wallpaper will stick.

From here, remove any light switch and electrical outlet panels, covering them with tape for safety. Also wipe down the walls with a warm cloth to remove any dust or markings, and then apply primer to protect the wall and prevent the sticking paste you use from being absorbed into the wall. Either a brush or roller ca be used for the primer application, after which you should wait at least two hours for the primer to dry.
